Durham
City of Medicine

The fifth-largest city in North Carolina and home to more than 145,000, Durham is nearly synonymous with medical care and research. One in three people work in the more than 300 healthcare-related companies.

Present-day Durham followed the former Native-American village of Adshusheer when the English, Scots and Irish settled in the 1700s on land granted to the Earl of Granville. Emerging as a viable community in the early- to mid-1800s, it was named after Dr. Bartlett Durham, a physician who provided land for the railroad station.

After the civil war surrender in Durham at Bennett Place, returning soldiers and local entrepreneurs, like the Duke family, made Durham famous world-wide for brightleaf tobacco and textiles. Durham is now defined by its universities, research and technology, medical centers, and championship basketball and serves as home to both Duke University and North Carolina Central University.

Durham is home to many must-see sights. One of the community's most visited sights is the Sarah P. Duke Memorial Gardens at Duke University. Within walking distance from the gardens is the incredible Duke Chapel with its intricate stained glass and 5,200-pipe organ.

Other sights in Durham include the Carolina Theater, the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, and the various recreation centers of the Eno River.

Noted for its excellence in medicine, education, research and industry, as well as its recreational and cultural activities, Durham is a great place to live.
